Grand Teton’s – Photography Blog USA Trip
Pilgrim Creek, Jackson Lake, Moose Wilson Road
Photography blog day seven –Today we decided to go chase Grizzly bears. We headed out to Pilgrim creek just before sunrise and didn’t see anything on our first loop. As we were heading back to Jackson Lake Dam a warning light came on for low tire pressure…yeah we had a flattie.
Flat Tire – Pilgrim Creek
As it turns out our rental car did not have a spare tyre and the sealant and small compressor were an epic fail. We sat on the side of the road for about an hour and a half, no sign of Grizzly 399 or her cubs, before our tow truck turned up. We were taken back to the Airport and our rental company quickly sorted us a new upgraded car.
We were actually really lucky we had cell phone service as another mile or two and we would have been walking. The rental company were excellent but our morning was over and we headed back to town for lunch.
Wildlife Photo Hunt Loop – Gros Ventre to Moose Wilson Road
About 3:30pm we headed out again hoping to see some wildlife. A local photographer had posted some morning photos of moose on Gros Ventre Rd so we headed out along Gros Ventre Rd in search of Moose first up. Unfortunately we had no luck.
On to Moose-Wilson Rd. Now this road has never failed to deliver and today was no exception. We round the corner and there are cars stopped. The good friend I am, I grab both cameras while Korin parks the car. I walk along and as I get closer it’s a young brown bear in a tree happily eating, in perfect view maybe 30 meters away. He stays up the tree for about 15 minutes before climbing down and walking past us all. Let’s just say I put a few people between me and the bear and we were pretty close, probably too close.
Having snapped what felt like hundreds of photos we headed for another loop of Gros Ventre Rd. once again we had no luck.
With light fading we thought we’d do another run along Moose-Wilson Rd. You guessed it, more bears. Our young friend was back up a tree eating, this time just off the other side of the road – a few more photos later we started walking back to our car.
On our return to the car we also spotted another bear sitting slightly further back in the brush just watching. As much as he was watching us we didn’t take our eye off him as we quickly walked back to our car.
A very successful bear day over.
