Yellowstone and Lamar Valley – Photography Blog USA Trip
Lamar Valley – Morning Trip
Photography blog day four – On day 4 we headed out from our hotel in Gardiner Montana around 7:30 am to head out to Lamar Valley.
After a pass of Lamar Valley the day before were we only saw bison and elk we did not have high hopes that today would be any different. However, we hit the Yellowstone wildlife jackpot.
We headed east on Lamar Valley towards the East Yellowstone entrance, we came across some animal spotters on the side of a hill, we stopped to see what they had spotted and it was the local wolf pack. However, they were too far for us to get pictures of. We continued towards the East entrance just before the East entrance a bull moose ran down the hill and just in front of us stopping to pose on the road for a quick photo shoot before he ran off. We continued out the park entrance for a bit before we decided to turn around and head back across Lamar Valley.
Lamar Valley – Return Trip
We traveled back towards the hotel in Gardiner and had another young coyote run out in front of us and he took a dip in the icy cold water to cross a stream. This allowed me to get some pretty adorable photos of him. After the coyote about ½ way back to the hotel we had a most amazing encounter with a brown bear that ran right out in front of us. As we came around the corner I caught a brown blob running down the hill to my left and I was like is that a bear, then all I could say was bear bear bear to Rachel who was also taking a second to register it was not a bison. We got out and was on the photo hunt once again, we got some good quality time with the bear before the bear jam started and the bear was off.
We headed back to the hotel and had lunch at the Two Bit, this is a great little local bar to get a good burger at.
Yellowstone – Geysers, Hot Springs and Bison
In the afternoon after lunch and a quick break at the hotel we headed down to the geysers and hot springs. This was uneventful from a photography stand point. On the way down to Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic Springs we saw a spot with a heard of bison that was the perfect setting for a sunset with bison silhouetted.
On the way back from the Geysers we stopped at Mary Mountain to wait for sunset and get that bison picture we saw on the way down. However, the sun and bison had a different idea. The bison heard kept moving south making to so we had to keep chasing them to keep them in the shot. This was a chilly walk though bush, water and other things. By the time the sun caught up it had fizzled and kept us chasing that perfect bison and sunset picture.
We hiked back to the car and continued to head back to the hotel to get some dinner and turn in for our early start to day 5.
